Scouting ahead is key to avoiding being bumped, if you see a frigate orbiting at an in-gate, then the next gate has a Mach, it is pretty safe to assume you need to dock or get your webbing alt.

That was irresponsible but I am confident you already understand that. If you follow general safety procedures as outlined in this thread you will have a completely different experience.
As I previously mentioned, the best way to avoid being bumped is to not put yourself in a position where you can be bumped.
You eluded that you are not satisfied with the options as they all require multi-player roles, I hate to break it to you, this is a multi-player game. It is designed so that running solo is doable but a lot harder than having friends/alts.

That is still too much. Keep it under a bil and you won't be targeted for anything but lolz, lolz gankers are the easiest to spot and avoid.

Freighters don't have rig slots, ccp wanted to give them to us instead of low slots but the whiners got their way and as usual it has backfired.

If I had a freighter, I would definitely fit either bulkheads or armor tank or would try to make an optimal tank fit in EVE hq. My issue is solely with bumping and, that if pilot simply happens to have his corpmates offline and doesnt drop more money on this game just to have a web alt, he cant defend himself against bumping. And sorry but even with nano and intertia stabs the align time is so high the enemy has plenty of time get you into the "eternal torture of bumping".
It's pretty simple, if it is not safe to fly your freighter, you shouldn't fly it. All of this whining about bumping is from people who want to play solo in a multi-player game. CCP has given us the tools to be able to play by ourselves but it costs more.
